Important Visa Terms
1
J-1 Visa
The most common term of all: the J-1 visa. In the United States visa categories usually have a letter and a number. Interns and trainees will need a J-1 visa, but students would need an F-1 visa. There are also work visas (H1-B, L1-A), family visas (K-1), visitor visas (B-2), and many more.
2
Visa Sponsor
A J-1 visa sponsor organization will always need to get involved when obtaining a J-1 visa. A sponsor is a third party organization authorized by the US government to issue a DS-2019 form (see below). Each sponsor organization has their own set of rules and procedures that have to be followed in order to obtain a DS-2019. At Correspond, we work together with these sponsors to assist you obtaining a J-1 visa.
3
DS-2019
The DS-2019 is perhaps the most important documents for J-1 visa holders. This is a "certificate of eligibility" provided by an authorized J-1 visa sponsor, and classifies you as eligible to participate in a J-1 visa program. You will have to take this document with you to an in-person visa interview, and always keep with you while traveling abroad.
4
DS-7002
The DS-7002 form is also referred to as the "training plan" document. It is another required document which will need to be signed by the J-1 visa participant, host company, and visa sponsor. The training plan is drafted by Correspond and the host company, and approved by the visa sponsor. It shows detailed goals and skills that will be obtained by the participant throughout the internship or traineeship.
5
SEVIS
The Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a US government database that is utilized to keep track of all J-1 visa holders and applicants. It provides an overview of all required information about the participant, host company, and the J-1 program itself. Only a visa sponsor is authorized to make changes within SEVIS.
